Burt Kimmelman: “Writing suggestions to help students explore some of the ideas in my essay”

A useful set of constraints in order, one task leading to the next (an exercise):

  1. Write a poem without using a single adjective or adverb.
  2. Write a poem that has a symmetry of form; e.g., same number of syllables in each line, and the same number of lines in each stanza. Advanced exercise: have the same number of stanzas (each comprised of the same number of lines, each of the lines with the same number of syllables) match in number the number of syllables in each of the lines.
  3. Think about whether a poem can simply be pure form only.

“That every shadow of wonder can stand forth in the most familiar words is the gift this poet offers his readers time and again.” — Susan Howe
