Poetry. Christina Olivares’s stellar debut collection No Map of The Earth Includes The Stars, winner of the 2014 Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize (selected by Brenda Hillman), establishes her as one of the best new poets writing today. In striking and gorgeous language, Olivares explores national, spiritual and linguistic borders, and the imperative to–and consequences of–cross(ing) them. The primary sequence, “Petition,” amasses a petition to the orisha/deity Babalu Aye for witness of a parent’s crossing-induced schizophrenia at a time when mortal avenues for recovery have been exhausted. “Petition” draws from medical and sociological research, political history, hallucinated conversation, and mythology. The second sequence, “Other Lives,” centers on themes of queerness and youth. No Map of The Earth Includes The Stars showcases the itinerary of a poet not so much pushing boundaries as transcending them.
